Thriving Through Challenges in College: The Contributing Factor of Self-Regulation

Abstract

Resilience is a significant protective factor that contributes notably to students’ mental health. As a personal quality that helps students face problems and challenges encountered during their academic journey, further studies are needed to explore the factors influencing students' resilience in Indonesia. Based on the initial study of student issues and prior research, social intelligence, self-regulation, and self-compassion play significant roles in shaping students' resilience. This study aims to identify the most influential factors affecting the students’ resilience in Indonesia. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach with correlational and survey methods. The participants were 400 undergraduate students aged 17—25 from various universities across Indonesia. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the Indonesian-adapted version of the Tromsø Social Intelligence Scale, Short Self-Regulation Scale, and Self-Compassion Scale. The collected data were analyzed using multiple linier regression to determine which factors most significantly impact students' resilience when considered together with other factors. The analysis revealed that self-regulation is the most influential factor on students’ resilience. Therefore, strategies or interventions are needed to improve students' self-regulation and help them overcome the challenges they face during their academic studies..
