Abstract


This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge of young KPGS dairy farmers regarding the principles of dairy cattle housing through the Young Dairy Farmer Training program at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Padjadjaran. The program involved 23 young dairy farmers from KPGS as participants. The activities were conducted through an extension approach consisting of interactive lectures, participatory discussions, and knowledge evaluation using pre-test and post-test assessments. The training materials covered housing requirements, ventilation, housing systems, barn facilities, animal grouping, and housing efficiency. The results showed that the participants’ average score increased from 8.1 in the pre-test to 13.2 in the post-test, indicating a significant improvement in knowledge after the training. Discussions with participants also revealed that most farmers did not have separate housing for calves and sick animals due to limitations in land availability and financial resources. The program demonstrated that extension activities tailored to the conditions of smallholder dairy farms were effective in improving farmers’ understanding of gradual and practical housing improvements. These findings provide a basis for developing more applicable dairy housing extension and mentoring programs for smallholder dairy farmers.
