Video-Based Education on Hygienic Milking and Mastitis Prevention for Dairy Farmers in Giriawas Village
Abstract
Milking practices that are not carried out hygienically can increase the risk of mastitis, lower milk quality and yield, and ultimately reduce farmers' income. This community service activity aimed to improve dairy farmers' knowledge of hygienic milking and mastitis prevention through interactive video-based education. The activity was conducted in Giriawas Village, Cikajang District, Garut Regency, involving 36 dairy farmers. The activities consisted of a pretest, delivery of learning materials, an educational video presentation, interactive discussions, a question and answer session, and a posttest. The evaluation results showed that the average score increased from 72.50 on the pretest to 86.50 on the posttest, representing an improvement of 14 points or 19.31%. Farmers had generally already applied several basic sanitation practices, such as keeping the barn clean, cleaning the udder and teats, washing hands, and cleaning milking equipment. However, understanding of foremilk stripping/inspection, hand-milking technique, post-milking teat care, and post-milking feeding still needs to be strengthened. These findings indicate that combining educational videos with interactive discussion can improve farmers’ knowledge and encourage a more participatory learning process. Follow-up activities are recommended, including hands-on demonstrations, on-farm assistance, and regular evaluations to assess changes in farmers’ practices and their effects on mastitis incidence and milk quality.
